I find it ironic that the author of this blog claims to be a freethinker but rejects facts in history, like the resurrection, and expects to be taken seriously by people. I applaud Graig Panza for sticking to the Truth with hostile people who don't have the decency to accept the resurrection as a fact given the reasonable amount of evidence for it.

What's really disturbing is that the author places so much value on his 'reasoning' abilities that he cannot think clearly.

By the way, human reason justified the Holocaust, justifies murder and all sorts of other sin and evils in the world. Worship of one's own 'reasoning' abilities is secular humanism, therefore secular humanism is the ultimate source of evil in the world. Christianity is the Truth, not religion. God, through the Lord Jesus, revealed Himself to mankind, therefore all people are without excuse. Religion is secular humanism with a different label. Atheism, 'freethought', and secular humanism are evil, and they need to be put to death, and they all have been killed at the cross of Christ. Thank God I am not a lunatic like yourself and I pray that you understand the intellectual suicide you are committing with your unbelief. Unbelief is the root of all evil.

The Resurrection is a fact in history. It's the ONLY reason why Western Civilization occurred. What you call 'apologetic drivel' has not been debunked like you say. If it was debunked, we wouldn't have the Bible anyway. Simply labeling apologetics drivel and referring to infidels.org as a reliable source doesn't debunk Christianity. Christianity is based on a fact in history: The literal resurrection of Christ. Real scholars believe the resurrection. Skeptics have no evidence whatsoever besides their pride.

Satan is the Great scapegoat . Like George Bush is for the progressive. Blame is what we do when we try to convince our selves we are not responsible. WE all know the progressive was all right on board with the decision when the war all went down. Us the public were the ones caught by surprise. Off topic I know. The point is everybody blames Satan instead of there individual self. Even Al Capone thought him self a stand up guy and could not see his own evil. The debate over how much a dictator persecutes religion is relevant if a dictator can be shown to persecute religion for reasons other than consolidation of power, if a dictator can be shown to persecute religions purely because they wished to impose atheism by force. All the communist dictatorships that have existed have explicitly stated their belief that religion is a negative force on society, that religious belief should be eliminated. Would they still have been brutal tyrants if not atheists? Sure. But to the extent that they were brutal towards religious believers in the name of promoting atheism beyond what was necessary to maintain power, then to that extent atheism caused them to be brutal.

Just to be clear, I am not claiming that their atheism made them brutal because of some sort of "atheists have n0 moral compass" bullshit. I am quite aware that lack of metaphysical assertions and a moral life are quite compatible.

You are back tracking, incidentally. In you blog entry you denied that atheism had anything to do with their brutality and in your last reply you downgraded to denying that atheism was a major contributor.

The degree that atheism contributed to brutality varied from communist dictator to communist dictator. In the case of Pol Pot, the persecution of religion was particularly intense, far far beyond what was necessary to consolidate power. In his case a good argument can be made that the desire to eradicate religious belief was a major factor in the savagery of his regime.

You are right, I jumped the gun with my no true Scotsman claims. I was reading many other atheist blogs before entering the discussion and conflated your arguments with those espoused by others. However, I do find a disturbing trend to treat the violence of state atheism as different from religious violence. I don't see a difference between a Christian pointing out the social and economic factors besides religion involved in the crusades and an atheist pointing out the factors besides atheism involved in communist tyranny.

Your definition of atheism needs to be fleshed out. Just saying it is the absence of belief in God is insufficient. That definition includes most Buddhists. Even if you expand that to any sort of supernatural belief you will still find a lot of Buddhists fitting your criteria. What I love about the Buddha is that he told his followers NOT to believe in Buddhism, but to test what he taught against one's own experience. My meditative practices produce meaningful and valuable experiences, yet I know that subjective experience cannot prove any truth claim beyond the assertion that I had an experience. If you investigate you will find that a large portion of western Buddhists don't believe in reincarnation, karma (at least as popularly conceived) and other doctrines of that nature. But I don't think that makes us atheists.

You don't get it. I'm only pulling a No True Scotsman if I deny that they were "true atheists". I'm not denying they were "true atheists". I'm denying that them not believing in God was the major contributer to their brutality. They were mainly influenced by their power and their utopian communist/fascist political views.

This whole debate over how much certain dictators persecuted religions is quite irrelevant.

LOL. You say you're a Buddhist and you have less metaphysical beliefs? Maybe less, but maybe more crazy ones.

Hitler killed loads of priests and ministers for speaking out against him. But he never made organized religion illegal. Lots of dictators have killed religious leaders who opposed them, but it is not necessary to suppress all organized religion to hold onto power. A year or so ago the Buddhist monks of Burma protested in mass against that country's military dictatorship. The military then killed the monks they identified as leaders of the protest, without suppressing Buddhism as a whole. In the Soviet Union and Cambodia, all religion was suppressed, not just members of religious groups who were in opposition to the government. Check this out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R... This is not an ambiguous point. If you deny that atheism motivated the persecution of religion in the Soviet Union and Cambodia you are pulling the same intellectual trick that you criticize in others, no true Scotsman.

I am not sure that I qualify as an apologist, incidently. By your absence of belief definition, I qualify as an atheist. I think Buddhist is more accurate, but I probably hold fewer metaphysical beliefs than you do.
